The Patient Gardener

Here's a dream: my own mangosteen tree. I've been dreaming about it since a recent trip to Costa Rica where we ate them by the bucketfull. Luscious, light, fragrant mangosteens. We brought back some seeds, but growing mangosteens is not a short term project. I was told it takes fifteen years for a tree to bear fruit. Hope they let me bring the tree with me to the nursing home.

  1. Never heard of them before. What do you eat - the white bit in the middle or the red surrounding pulp?

Found you through Blotanical. Hope you enjoy it there and we'll see you around a lot.

  2. Oh my goodness, I have never seen anything like that before. I think the longer you have to wait for something, the more you appreciate the outcome! Welcome to Blotanical!

  3. I have always wanted to try many of the tropical fruits, they all look so good. Mangosteens are supposed to have a peachy flavor, they just sound so divine. I hope your seeds germinate.

  4. Thanks, I'm loving Blotanical and all the great bogs. I hope those seeds germinate too. The guy I talked to in Costa Rica said they are notoriously hard to start. We shall see!

  5. The mangosteen tree grows well in our Malaysian weather. They are usually in season along with the durians. I have not grown any mangosteen trees yet, but you are. That's great! I look forward to hear about it's progress. Good luck on those seeds!

  6. Thanks! When I was in Costa Rica someone told me that they are experimenting with plants from Malaysia -- similar climates, I think. I didn't see any durians at the markets though.
